Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of April 7, 2018)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Jack White's 'Boarding House Reach' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
Jack White's third No. 1, following 'Lazaretto' and 'Blunderbuss,' started with the biggest sales week for a rock album in 2018.
Jack White claimed his third No. 1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200), as the rocker’s third solo studio effort, Boarding House Reach, opens atop the tally.
The set -- which was released on March 23 via Third Man/Columbia Records -- earned 124,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 29, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 120,612 were in traditional album sales -- the largest sales week for a rock album in 2018.
White previously topped the Billboard 200 with his last two studio sets: 2014’s Lazaretto and 2012’s Blunderbuss. The former launched at No. 1 with 138,000 copies sold (before the chart transitioned to an equivalent album units-ranked list in late 2014), while the latter bowed also bowed with 138,000. (Both figures are rounded to the nearest thousand; in its debut week, Blunderbuss sold slightly less than Lazaretto’s opening frame).
Boarding House Reach’s launch of 121,000 copies sold marked the second-biggest sales week of 2018 for any album, trailing only the bow of Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods, with 242,000 sold in the week ending Feb. 8. Boarding nets the biggest sales frame for a rock album since U2’s Songs of Experience (180,000 in the week ending Dec. 7, 2017).
White’s debut, the only new arrival in the top 10, was boosted by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with White’s upcoming U.S. and Canada tour. The trek starts on April 19 in Detroit.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of April 7, 2018)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Former No.1 Kane Brown with his SELF-TITLED moved 2-1 (#21-19 Billboard 200) selling 5,400 copies (69-week total 354,300) for a 8th non-consecutive week atop the chart.

Chris Stapleton with TRAVELLER (MERCURY/ UMGN) moved 3-2 (36-28 BB200) selling 6,035 copies (152-week total 2,257,500) whilst his sets From A Room: Volume 1 (Mercury/Universal Music Group Nashville) slipped 6-8 (54-51 BB200) selling 6,323 copies (47-week total 753,400) and From A Room: Volume 2 dropped 9-11 (80-97 BB200) selling 5,349 copies (17-week total 355,400).

Last week’s No.1 Scotty McCreery, with SEASONS CHANGE (Triple Tigers/RED) fell 1-3 (7-37 BB200) selling 8,824 copies (down 74%) 2-week total 43,206.
Former No.1 Thomas Rhett with LIFE CHANGES (Valory/Big Machine Label Group) held at No.4 (#44-42 Billboard 200) selling 2,169 copies (29-week total 252,900).

Former No.1 Luke Bryan with WHAT MAKES YOU COUNTRY (Capitol Nashville | UMGN) held at No.5 (#50-45 Billboard 200) selling 5,682 copies (16-week total 258,000).

The debut album from singer-songwriter Jordan Davis, HOME STATE (MCA Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville), blew in at No.6 (#47 Billboard 200), earning 11,000 equivalent album units in its first week ending March 31, according to Nielsen Music. Of the sum, 5,800 were traditional album sales.

The 30-year-old Davis, who is originally from Shreveport, La., co-wrote all 12 songs on Home State, which was produced by Paul DiGiovanni, the lead guitarist of Boston pop-rock outfit Boys Like Girls. DiGiovanni additionally co-wrote Dan + Shay’s “How Not To,” which topped the Country Airplay chart dated July 1, 2017.

Singles You Up,” the maiden track from Davis’ LP, rose to a new peak on Hot Country Songs, darting 8-6 in its 37th week on the list. It also hit a new Country Airplay high, jumping 5-2 with Most Increased Audience honors, up 15 percent to 37.3million audience impressions while gaining by 5 percent to 11,000 downloads sold and 3 percent to 5.9 million U.S. streams.

The 12-track project apart from current single, "Singles You Up," includes new tracks, "Slow Dance In A Parking Lot," "Tough To Tie Die," "So Do I," and more. Davis kicked off his "White Wine And Whiskey Tour" on Friday, February 2nd.
“Making this record has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” said Jordan. “I want to thank everyone who was involved in bringing this to life, especially to my producer Paul Digiovanni and the songwriters that helped me create these songs. I can’t wait for y’all to hear it”
“I really hope that through this album you get a better glimpse into who I am as an artist, you know a glimpse into not only my country influences, but some of my rock influences, some of my R&B influences, and just my love for songwriting. I really feel like we’ve done a good job with the production [and] with the writing of this record, and I hope you feel like you know a little bit more about who I am after listening to it. That’s kinda what I hope you take away with from the Home State album.

Critical reception for Jordan Davis’ Home State:
12 Tracks/ Time: 37:26 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Entertainment Focus (Rating: 4/5)… Varied, infectious and engaging, Davis' vocals are superb, He has the potential to be a crossover star. Home State sits in the same crossover category that is being led by artists such as Thomas Rhett and Sam Hunt. Davis fuses a
real mix of styles throughout the 12-song set, which makes for an interesting and varied listen. It’ll no doubt cause plenty of discussions about whether it’s pop or Country but to my ears it’s Country that infuses different genres to create an engaging sound

Allmusic (Rating: 3 STARS) It's not just that it seems like he sings with a smile on his face: the album's blend of modern pop, R&B, and country positively glistens, generating a bright, chipper energy that makes even the ballads seem sunny. Such positivity sometimes threatens to spin Home State into motivational music for daytime drudgery -- it's a tonic for the office, commute, or housework -- but that's where Davis' friendliness works in his favor. ...too much of Home State doesn't rise above the pleasingly generic -- but when he gets his hands on the right songs, he's an ingratiating and ultimately endearing singer.

Country Music People (Rating: 2 STARS) It probably took Jordan Davis longer to grow his hipster beard than he’s had a record deal, but it takes more than impressive facial hair to give what is essentially a really average pop-masquerading-as-country album any credibility. On a more positive note, this arrived the same day as the new Jason Aldean release and this is nowhere near as hateful as that is. - Duncan Warwick

Former No.1 Luke Combs with THIS ONE’S FOR YOU (River House/ Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) held at No.7 (#56-49 Billboard 200) selling 1,997 copies (43-week total 204,200).
Brett Young with self- titled BRETT YOUNG (BMLG) fell 8-9 (66-60 Billboard 200) selling 1,688 copies (59-week total 196,100).

Jon Pardi with CALIFORNIA SUNRISE (Capitol Nashville | UMGN) held at No.10 (#101-80 Billboard 200) selling 1,839 copies (93-week total 227,400)

Outside the Top 10
Former No.1 Blake Shelton with TEXOMA SHORE (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville) slipped 12-13 (120-118 BB200) selling 3,518 copies (21-week total 214,800).

Old Dominion with HAPPY ENDINGS (RCA Nashville | SMN) fell 18-20 (#167-177 BB200).
Kid Rock with SWEET SOUTHERN SUGAR fell 15-23 selling 4,038 copies (19-week total 149,300).

FALLING SHORT of Top 50:
On the Country Album Sales list (pure sales; old methodology)

Kris Jones with his 5 track EP KRIS JONES (Bent Bar Records | Amazon UK - UK iTunes) made a debut at No.20 on Country Album Sales selling around 1,200 copies.

Jones grew up in Fort Worth, raised with four other siblings by his mother, who held down two jobs to keep the family afloat. Since his mom was white and his dad black —something Jones says was not popular in his neighbourhood at the time — he found it difficult to fit in with any group at school.
At age 26, he was released, found a job, and got married. He never lost his dreams of becoming a singer, but family and work took over most of his focus. His wife urged him to try out for American Idol, but he was just outside of the age requirements. A tryout for The Voice was also unsuccessful.
Jones returned to everyday life, but the serendipitous video recorded by his daughter singing "Tennessee Whiskey" opened up an unexpected door. From there, he was invited to sing on Ellen, and following that, was accepted by The Voice, as well as new competition The Four.

Courtney Marie Andrews with her  10 tracks MAY YOUR KINDNESS REMAIN (Loose | Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com) made a debut at No.24 selling 1,100 copies.

In advance of the release, the album’s title track was premiered as part of NPR Music’s “Songs We Love” series. Of the song NPR Music praised, “May Your Kindness Remain, a collection of songs, borne from interactions with others, that strives for healing and empathy in the midst of division and discord.”
In support of the album, Andrews will tour the US and Europe throughout 2018, including a newly confirmed headline show at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on 24 April. Produced by Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits), the album was recorded over eight days at a rented house-turned-studio in L.A. In addition to Andrews on vocals and electric/acoustic guitar, the album features Dillon Warnek (electric guitar), Daniel Walter (organ, Wurlitzer, accordion), Charles Wicklander (piano, Wurlitzer), William Mapp (drums, percussion), Alex Sabel (bass) and C.C. White (background vocals).

FGL TIES FGL Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line with “Meant to Be” (Warner Bros./Big Machine Label Group) earned another milestone as it topped Hot Country Songs for an 18th week. The collaboration ties FGL’s own “H.O.L.Y.,” which ruled for 18 weeks beginning on the list dated May 21, 2016, for the fourth longest reign in the chart’s 59-year history.
Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” holds the record with 34 weeks at No.1 in 2017, while FGL’s debut hit, “Cruise,” is second with 24 weeks on top in 2012 and 2013. Leroy Van Dyke’s “Walk On By” ranks third with 19 weeks at No.1 in 1961 and 1962.
Thus, Florida Georgia Line now boasts three of the five longest commands in the Hot Country Songs’ archives. “Meant” is rolling on the strength of being dually promoted at both country and pop radio. On Country Airplay, the song, which was written by Rexha and FGL’s Tyler Hubbard with Josh Miller and David Garcia, climbed 4-3 in its 19th week, up 9 percent to 35.9 million in audience. The song also rose to No.3 on the Pop Songs and Adult Pop Songs airplay charts.
“Meant” paced Country Digital Song Sales for a 16th week (35,000 sold, down 1 percent) and Country Streaming Songs for a 14th frame (23.2 million U.S. streams, up 2 percent).
On the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, “Meant” held at its No. 2 peak, where it’s the highest charting hit for a country duo or group since Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” in 2010.

Co-authored by Kelsea Ballerini, "I Hate Love Songs" re-entered Hot Country Songs at No.45, following its No.39 debut on the chart dated Nov. 25, 2017. Now a proper radio single, it lifted 49-44 on Country Airplay, up 31 percent to 2.2 million impressions.

Of Note: Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey's "The Middle" rose to the top of Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart, lifting 2-1 on the survey dated April 7.
Zedd notched his second Pop Songs No. 1, after "Stay," with Alessia Cara, which reigned for six weeks beginning last June. Morris and Grey each earn their first Pop Songs leader.
Notably, Maren has crowned the Country Airplay chart with two songs, as featured on Thomas Rhett's "Craving You" and with her own "I Could Use a Love Song." Thanks to "The Middle," she is the sixth artist to have topped both Country Airplay and Pop Songs, joining Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, Tim McGraw, P!nk and Taylor Swift. (Honorable mention to Darius Rucker, who has led Pop Songs fronting Hootie & the Blowfish and Country Airplay with seven solo songs.)
