Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart  issue week of September 9, 2017)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Rock band Brand New nabbed its first No.1 album on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200) as SCIENCE FICTION started atop the tally with 58,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 24, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 54,543 were in traditional album sales. The set was released Aug. 18 through the band's own Procrastinate! Music Traitors label, and is the first album from the band in nearly eight years. Science Fiction is the third rock album to lead the Billboard 200 in 2017, following Arcade Fire's EVERYTHING NOW (Aug. 19) and Linkin Park's ONE MORE LIGHT (June 10).

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of September 9, 2017)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Based on multi-metric album consumption in its 12th week, Luke Combs with THIS ONE’S FOR YOU (River House/ Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) held the #1 slot and led Billboard Top Country Albums for a third frame (#36-32; Billboard 200; selling 5,060 copies (up 1%; 12-week total 94,632). The title first reigned upon its June 24 debut.

Chris Stapleton with TRAVELLER (MERCURY/ UMGN) held at #2 (38-41 Billboard 200) selling 5,911 copies (up 4%, 121-week total 2,048,100). Stapleton’s From a Room: Volume 1 (Mercury/Universal Music Group Nashville) fell 6-9 (48-67 BB200) selling 6,206 copies (down 17%; 16-week total 496,300).

Keith Urban with RIPCORD (Hit Red/Capitol Nashville) rose 7-4 (#52-51 BB200) selling 4,318 copies (up 20%; 68-week total 647,200).
Brett Young with self-titled debut (BMLG) rose 8-5 (#53-54 BB200) selling 3,497 copies (down 3%; 28-week total 125,000).
Kane Brown with self-titled KANE BROWN (Zone 4/RCA Nashville) climbed 10-6 (#62-59 BB200) selling 2,771 copies (up 6%; 38-week total 184,100).
Jon Pardi with CALIFORNIA SUNRISE climbed 11-7 (65 BB200) selling 2,029 copies (up 15%; 62-week total 175,300).
Florida Georgia Line with DIG YOUR ROOTS (BMLG) rose 9-8 (#61-65 BB200) selling 1,470 copies (down 6%; 52-week total 417,500).
Thomas Rhett with TANGLED UP (Valory | BMLG) rounded out the top 10 (12-10) selling 1,591 copies (100-week total 592,700).

Josh Abbott Band with UNTIL MY VOICE GOES OUT (Pretty Damn Thing | Thirty Tigers) made a debut at No.22 (#141 BB200) selling 4,674 copies.
This marked the fifth full-length from the Lubbock, Texas-based outfit to grace Top Country Albums at No. 22, earning 5,000 equivalent album units in its first week.

The set is the group’s first since 2015’s FRONT ROW SEAT, which debuted and peaked at No. 9 on the list with sales of 12,766 copies. The Josh Abbott Band are described as “the latest generation of Texas country torchbearers making inroads into the mainstream”

Critical reception for The Josh Abbott Band’s Until My Voice Goes Out:
14 Tracks/ Time: 39:30 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

The Country Note - In stark contrast to the dark emotional cloud of Front Row Seat, Until My Voice Goes Out oozes with hope. “This album is about appreciating the moment and your family and your friends, and living life the right way,” Abbott said in a press release. “It’s really all about finding clarity and focusing on what’s important.” These words could not ring more true as during the process of creating this album, Abbott found out that he and his now fiancĂ©e Taylor Parnell were expecting (the two welcomed their baby daughter in May), and his father suffering a stroke in February, passing away a few weeks later

Country Standard Time (Rating: Positive) Josh Abbott Band opens its album "Until My Voice Goes Out" with the title track, which features the unique combination of stately strings along with plucked banjo. In one respect, it's a love song about the desire for a specific woman. Couched within this plea, though, is a sincere wish for a life lived to the fullest.....The songs are so good however, they fully deserve to be gussied up this way. If Abbott's voice ever does go out after singing songs like these, it'll be vocal effort well spent.

Various Artists with Now That's What I Call Country Volume 10 (Universal Music Group) rounded out the top 25 (23-25; 140-160 Billboard 200) selling 5,000 copies (down 6%; 11-week total 92,616).

Outside the Top 25
Miranda Lambert with THE WEIGHT OF THESE WINGS (Vanner/ RCA Nashville/Sony Music Nashville) fell 21-28 (133-176 BB200) selling 1,729 copies (down 24%; 40-week total 382,800).

Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer with NOT DARK YET (Silver Cross | Thirty Tigers) made a debut at No.39 (#11 Country Album Sales) selling 3,683 copies.
The two learned music and ambition from their parents, who both wanted to pursue music professionally. “Our parents taught us how to be individuals and artists,” Ms. Moorer said. “But not how to make money or have healthy relationships,” her sister added.

Critical reception for Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer’s Not Dark Yet:
10 Tracks/Time: 37:13 Folk-Rock Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

NPR.org - By including songs learned long ago from their parents' records — the Louvin Brothers' "Every Time You Leave," Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings," Jessi Colter's "I'm Looking For Blue Eyes" — Moore and Lynne invoke their history of singing together from the time they could talk. But to dwell only on the naturalness and familiarity they've cultivated as singing partners who happen to share some genes is to overlook some of their partnership's most compelling qualities. Their version of sibling harmony isn't frictionless — it's born of a deep empathy that embraces individuality, that makes room for the approaches to expression they've each developed over the course of almost five decades.

Rollingstone (Rating: 3.1/2 STARS) This long-gestating duet LP shows a shared sensibility and two perfectly matched voices. Their reading of Nirvana's "Lithium" connects Kurt Cobain's "Sunday Morning" to Johnny Cash's, and to their own history. But the title track is the crown jewel, showing the river-deep musicality of a latter-day Dylan croaker when it's parsed by immaculate, blood-kin harmony.

The Guardian (Rating: 4 STARS) ...Their voices interweave majestically on cover versions that stretch with surprising ease from bluegrass to grunge. Country stars such as the Louvin Brothers and Merle Haggard are an easy fit for the Alabama-born pair. Less expected is the

gothic croon of Nick Cave’s Into My Arms, while the Killers’ My List and Nirvana’s Lithium are reframed from rock anthems to piano ballads. The one original, Is It Too Much, addresses the scars left by their father’s murder of their mother and subsequent suicide; a delicate, harrowing piece.

Slant Magazine (Rating: 4 STARS) ....Throughout Not Dark Yet, Lynne and Moorer carry each other, channeling heartache through songs of pain and transcendence. Every note of it feels true to who they are and where they've been.

Allmusic (Rating: 3.1/2 STARS) ...These two walk and stumble through that dark night, leaning together as the lyrics pour down like a river of tears. The song's question may never be answered, but its utterance is enough to guarantee another step for each. Not Dark Yet is a beacon, a glimmer of the possible. It's a stark, beautiful recording that hopefully proves something to both Lynne and Moorer: That what's here is a new beginning and that there is much more to explore.

Country Standard Time (Rating: Positive) ...The song that stands out most strikingly, though, is Nick Cave's "Into My Arms....The album closes with "Is It Too Much," a song the pair wrote together. And it's as emotionally gripping as any of the project's other notable covers, and reveals how they've learned well from their influences. These songs also tell us it's dark alright. But these performances are blindingly bright, indeed.

Ray Wylie Hubbard with TELL THE DEVIL… ...I'M GETTIN' THERE AS FAST AS I CAN (Bordello | Thirty Tigers) made a debut at No.43 (#12 Country Album Sales) selling 3,572 copies.

Critical reception for Ray Wylie Hubbard’s Tell the Devil I'm Gettin' There as Fast as I Can:
11 Tracks/ Time: 45:29 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com | UK Country iTunes Album Debut #27

Allmusic (Rating; 4 STARS) ..At the age of 70, Ray Wylie Hubbard is making music that's tougher, more effective, and better crafted than most artists a third his age, and Tell the Devil I'm Gettin' There as Fast as I Can is yet another striking example of his casual brilliance.

Saving Country Music (Rating: 1.3/4 Guns Up (7.5/10)) ....70-year-old guys without super
hits on their resume are not supposed to be as revered as Ray Wylie Hubbard is by his musical peers, or just hitting their stride creatively. But that is the strange, inverted, winding road Ray Wylie Hubbard has taken to christening himself a living legend in almost universal acceptance, at least for the folks who’ve heard of him.

Pop Matters (Rating: 8/10) ...Album closer “In Times of Cold” is a masterpiece of a dark night of the soul reflection, Cohenesque in its wry balance of the sacred and profane. Patty Griffin’s accompanying vocal is a salve upon Hubbard’s wounded and worn voice. In all, Tell the Devil I’m Gettin’ There as Fast as I Can finds Hubbard doing what he does best. There’s nothing surprising here in terms of him doing anything unexpected; rather, he is content to play the genre he has mastered, which is Whatever the Hell he damn well pleases. And the true sign of its effectiveness is that Hubbard continues to surprise, even when he’s delivering what’s expected.

FALLING SHORT of Top 50:
On the Country Album Sales list (pure sales; old methodology)

In her second week Lindsay Ell with her debut full-length, THE PROJECT (Stoney Creek/Broken Bow Music Group) plummeted with a 1-31 drop selling 1,546 copies (down 85%; 2-week total 11,798) and fell off the Top Country Albums top 50 from a #4 debut.

Riley Green with OUTLAWS LIKE US (EP) made a debut at #32 selling 1,500 copies.
Critical reception for Riley Green’s Outlaws Like Us:
6 Tracks/ Time: 21:24 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Southern Sky Site (Rating: GRADE: A++) The 6 song EP contains an updated version of his
hit song “Bury Me In Dixie” as well as 5 brand new songs…The updated “Bury Me In Dixie” is much more lively and upbeat and somehow sounds even better than the first version. The first song on the EP is “Man Like Me”. This is the most upbeat song on the release and is an in your face pride song about what makes a man like him. The second song is “How Ya Left Me”. After the loud and proud “Man Like Me”, “How Ya Left Me” sombers the tone a little bit. It tells the story of how he was left by a girl saying “you left me like you leave a warm drink right about last call” and other descriptions like that...All in all not only did Riley live up to the sky high expectations but he blew them out of the water.

Various Artists with 20 #1'S CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY (Ume) made a debut at #37 selling 1,200 copies.

Jerry Douglas with his 11 tracks WHAT IF (Rounder; Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com) made a debut at #38 selling 1,100 copies.
Jerry Douglas, the 14x GRAMMY award winner who has played on over 2,000 separate recordings (Alison Krauss, Mumford & Sons, James Taylor, etc.), presents a new album with a unique sound and a brand-new outfit of musicians, hand-picked by Douglas himself. On What If, Douglas decisively merges jazz inclinations with the bluegrass, country, blues, swing, rock, and soul he's spent his life absorbing and performing, forging a sound that flies beyond the boundaries of anything he - or anyone else - has done before. From the up-tempo combination of what Douglas calls 'bebop jazz and caveman jazz' on 'Cavebop' to the symphonically sweeping title track, WHAT IF delves into areas unexplored by any other musician, much less by Dobro! The album also includes a funky, soulful take on Tom Waits' '2:19' and a blistering bluegrass-meets-jam-band reinvention of the classic 'Hey Joe.'

Luke Combs with “When It Rains It Pours” (River House/ Columbia Nashville) became his second Hot Country Songs top 10, as it jumped 12-8. His debut hit, “Hurricane,” topped Country Airplay for two weeks beginning May 27 and peaked at No. 3 on Hot Country Songs (where it’s now No.9). After the release of the official video for “Rains” on Aug. 15, the song surged by 22% to 6.8 million U.S. streams, holding at its No.6 high on Country Streaming Songs, and by 14% to 17,000 sold as it hits a new peak on Country Digital Song Sales (7-5). On Country Airplay, the track lifted 17-16, up 13% to 17.4 million.

Jana Kramer with new single “I've Done Love” (which compares love to drugs and alcohol in its ability to cause pain) landed her a sixth Hot Country Songs appearance with a bow at No.35, fueled by first-week sales of 13,000 downloads.

Billboard Country Airplay (Chart issue week of September 9, 2017)

Old Dominion with “No Such Thing As a Broken Heart” (RCA Nashville) rose 2-1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart dated Sept. 9, up 6% to 44.4 million audience impressions in the week ending Aug. 27, according to Nielsen Music. On Hot Country Songs, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, “Broken” held at its No.5 peak.
Penned by Jesse Frasure and Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen and Brad Tursi (the band also includes Geoff Sprung and Whit Sellers),
“Broken” is the first single from the act’s second studio full-length, HAPPY ENDINGS (released Aug. 25).
We feel like [“Broken”] is the most important song that we’ve released to date,” Rosen told Billboard. “With that in mind, seeing it go all the way to No.1 is really special. It means so much to us.”
Old Dominion earned its third Country Airplay leader and, with its 25-week trip to the summit, its quickest trip to the top. The group’s first chart-topper, “Break Up With Him,” ruled the survey in its 40th week (Nov.14, 2015, for its first of two weeks at No. 1). “Song for Another Time” then reached the pinnacle in its 27th frame (Dec. 24, 2016, for one week at No.1).
“Old Dominion’s sound fits my station’s sound perfectly,” said WBWL Boston PD Lance Houston.
We started playing ‘Broken’ early and often, and it has performed so well that we now have more than 1,300 plays on it. I’ve already heard Happy Endings; I think it’s incredible. Also, this is good timing, because [the band] opened for Kenny Chesney this past weekend [Aug. 25-26] at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, and the crowd reaction to this song was incredible.”

Kenny Chesney collected his 53rd Country Airplay top 10 as “All the Pretty Girls” hopped 11-9 (27.8 million, up 10%). He ranked third among all artists in the chart’s 27-year history, behind only George Strait (61 top 10s) and Tim McGraw (57).
Kane Brown achieved his first top 10 as “What Ifs” (Zone 4/RCA Nashville), featuring Lauren Alaina, rose 14-10 (25.4 million, up 16%). Alaina earned her second top 10, following her April 22 leader “Road Less Traveled.”
Luke Bryan with “Light It Up” (Capitol Nashville), the first entry from his next album (due later this year), arrived at No.20 on Country Airplay (14.2 million) and No. 21 on Hot Country Songs. “Light,” which Bryan wrote with Old Dominion’s Brad Tursi, sold 18,000 downloads in less than two days of tracking and debuted at No.3 on Country Digital Song Sales.
Bryan’s last LP, 2015’s KILL THE LIGHTS, became the first set to generate six Country Airplay No.1s when its single “Fast” reached the top on the April 15 chart.
