Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News

Thanks to the March 18 release of "Frozen" on DVD and Blu-ray, its soundtrack has scored its best sales week yet. The album spends a seventh week at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200), selling 201,966 copies (1,633,246 sold in 17 weeks) in the week ending March 23 (up 104 percent), according to Nielsen SoundScan. That easily trumped its previous high-water mark, when it shifted 165,000 in the week ending Jan. 5. A week ago, it was No. 1 with 99,000 copies sold. The "Frozen" album's sales are red hot, owed to buzz generated by the fast-selling home video version of the film. Disney said that 3.2 million units of the DVD and Blu-ray were sold during its first day of release. It's unusual for an album to log its best sales week so far into its chart life. "Frozen," which was released Nov. 26, 2013, is currently in its 17th week on the chart. The last album that was as old as "Frozen" to sell more than 200,000 in a week was Adele's "21," a little over two years ago.

Eric Church with THE OUTSIDERS dropped from #10 to #14 on the BB200.
It returned to #1 on Top Billboard Country Albums. This is its third week atop the country summit. "The Outsiders" has sold 476,000 copies, making it the best-selling album released so far released in 2014. ("Frozen" and Beyonce's "Beyonce" have sold more copies in 2014, but they were released in 2013.) Church beat last weeks #1 from Luke Bryan by just over 300 albums.

In his second week Luke Bryan's "Spring Break 6...Like We Ain't Ever" Digital EP fell from #2 to #15 on the BB200( #1 - #2 Country).

Sara Evans with her second week at retail with her set SLOW ME sold another 11,000 copies (some 58% down on her debut week) and fell #9 to #34 (#2 - #7 country)

The Academy of Country Music released the Official 2014 ACM Awards Zinepak again this year exclusively through Walmart on March 18. It entered the BB200 at No.28 (#5 Country) with 12,632 copies sold
This is the fourth partnership between the ACM and ZinePak. The previous three compilations (2011, 2012, and 2013) all debuted in the Top 20 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, despite being released in limited quantities and at only one retailer.
This year’s collection includes two compilation CDs (31 songs), with songs from Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, George Strait and Taylor Swift. A 120-page magazine, six collectible guitar picks, and an ACM Awards nominee ballot. It also comes with access to exclusive videos, behind-the-scene photos, and interviews from more than 30 artists, including all the Entertainer of the Year nominees:

Jo Dee Messina with her first album outside of Curb Records, ME (Dreambound/ Entertainment One), sold 2,600 copies in its first week to land at No.156 on the BB200  (#19 Country)
It’s the fifth full-length studio album from the 43-year former CMA Horizon Award country singer who launched her career in 1995 with Curb Records. The album was released on Messina's own Dreambound Records and distributed by Entertainment One on March 18, 2014.
The album was "crowd-funded" with the help from Messina's fan base with a successful Kickstarter campaign in spring of 2013. 1,017 backers pledged $121,743 of a $100,000 goal of which 301 backers at $50 received an early copy of the CD with a T-SHIRT.
The lead single, "Peace Sign" (written by Amy Dalley / Tyler Hayes / Scott Leger) was issued to radio on August 23, 2013 followed by a self penned second single >> "A Woman's Rant", which impacted radio on February 24, 2014. The album’s title cut was written by Kathie Baillie (part of prominent late 80s/ early 90s duo Baillie & the Boys), Canadian singer-songwriter Patricia Conroy along with Messina.

Critical reception for “'Me”:
12 Tracks/ Time: 42:25 CD - Smart Choice Music - US iTunes - Amazon.com

Associated Press (by Michael McCall) ...Jo Dee Messina opens her new album, "Me," with a song title that declares she's "Not Dead Yet." The veteran country singer proved just that when fans rallied behind her Kickstarter campaign, helping her raise more than $100,000 for the recording of this 12-song collection. Messina's declaration that she's still alive and well comes across clearly on this playfully vibrant album. "Me" repeatedly speaks of second stages in life — and, by proxy, in careers, too. Messina, 43, continually addresses the value of experience in her songs, as well as in co-writing seven songs and in co-producing the album with Julian King.......The album's ballads slow things down — not just in tempo, but in quality, too. However, whenever the beat kicks in, so does Messina's entertaining style. "Me" proves that Messina's fans are right to think she still has plenty to offer.

Allmusic (Rating: 3.5 STARS) .. Messina's own newly founded label Dreambound Records, so it's her baby all the way, affording her the kind of creative freedom Curb is hardly known for giving its artists.... what has she come up with? Well, Me is pretty much made up of what
she's always done, a smooth mix of contemporary Nashville country and pure adult pop that rises a notch or two above the mere formulaic because of Messina's feisty attitude and powerful voice. True, there are more rock touches to some of the songs, and there are plenty of snarling, big-sounding electric guitars on these tracks, and a couple of songs like the funk pop "Take It" or the pure pop "He's Messed Up" have no country elements at all, but then none of these would sound too much out of place on a 21st century contemporary country station, either. Arguably two of the best songs, "Love on a Maybe" and "Breakin' It Down," are in the emotional and confessional mode of Taylor Swift, say, but with a little bit more rough edge and grit....In a way, Messina is a bridge between traditional country female artists like Dolly Parton or Tammy Wynette and younger contemporary stars like Taylor Swift, retaining the stubborn, don't-mess-with-me country girl image of the former while engaging in the more urban, uptown country girl pop of the latter. It's really what Messina has always done, though, and with the freedom granted Me after her release from Curb, she hasn't changed much, which will comfort her many fans.

Nashville Gab (Rating: A-) They say it's difficult to catch lightning in a bottle twice, right? Wrong. Jo Dee Messina defies the odds with her just-released set ME. Blasting on all cylinders, the red-headed powerhouse returns to her charming roots on the 12-track collection, but with a new found maturity, grace and poise. Whether it is the empowering opener "Not Dead Yet," perhaps a nod to her splashy rebound, or the intensely emotional closer "Say Goodbye to Superman" (the best song she's ever recorded), Messina is back in full form...

Albums due next week: Johnny Cash's "Out Among The Stars" with industry predicted sales of 30K - 35K and Jerrod Niemann's "High Noon" (12K).

The first, in June 1998, was "If You See Him/If You See Her" by Reba McEntire & Brooks & Dunn (In one other case, a duo collaborated with a group and landed a #1 hit. That was in December 1986, when "Too Much Is Not Enough" by the Bellamy Brothers with the Forester Sisters hit #1.)

"We're a bunch of drunks down here. "There's too much, to be honest with you," he adds. "We can't keep talking about Fireball [whiskey] and Coors Light and having the tailgate down, etc. So we'll task our writers and artists to dig a little deeper."

Votes Pour In For Raintown -  Glasgow Pop/Country / Americana (?) duo Raintown (picture) snagged the Best New Scottish Band or Solo Artist Trophy at The Scottish Variety Awards organised by KJM Events which returned to Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza on Saturday 22nd March 2014. "Previous winners have all gone on to forge successful careers"
Allegedly “Celebrating the best in Scottish Variety” during an evening of glitz and glam, the event was hosted by 105-106 Capital FM Breakfast presenters Des & Jennie.  Past performers have included singing sensations Susan Boyle, Sandi Thom, Paolo Nutini and Nina Nesbitt.
The winner of this and the other categories in the 2014 Scottish Variety Awards was decided by public votes online at capitalfm.com. Voting closed at midnight on Friday the 7th March.

Raintown’s 28 year old Claire McArthur (born in Glasgow) and the now 35 year old Paul Bain (Birthday 24th March) once again used social media on Facebook and Twitter to encourage their 16,000+ Facebook and 5K Twitter fanbase to vote and they responded. Their C2C Pop Up stage musician pals Alan West and Gary Quinn were more than happy to blindly vote and joined the hundreds of followers who faithfully lent their support (without knowing much if anything about the other nominees)

Claire (left) : Thank you to DashingDolls Glasgow for the beautiful hair and make up! Thank you ladies!

Previously online fan voting for Raintown (formerly a duo under the name of pop act "OMNI" Myspace recently deleted!) has won them a competition on Real Radio to open for Wet Wet Wet on Friday 20th July (in front of 25,000 fans). They also were winners of (bizarrely) Folk Traditional Recording of The Year, for their now 4-year old album HOPE IN TROUBLED TIMES at the much criticized and now defunct The Scottish New Music Awards held on 2nd Sept 2012.
The much hyped Scottish duo were winners of the 2013 British Country Music Awards (BCMAwards) Duo of the Year with a nomination and voting by unknown individuals , with no fan voting, but a voting panel cloaked in secrecy.
The duo are being championed by UKCountryRadio.com’s Simon Large & Will Downie, Steve Cherelle (BBC Radio Essex, BCMAward compere), Stewart Fenwick (Celtic Music Radio) and Emily Saxton (Maverick Magazine).
At The Scottish Variety Awards Raintown beat out 4 other acts:
a) PAWS (Glasgow three-piece with its roots in Ross-shire conprising bass player Ryan Drever frontman Phillip Taylor and drummer Joseph Swinney were brought up in Tain) They will release their debut album which they recorded in New York for Brighton-based Fat Cat Records.
b) Melanie Mason (55K Twitter followers), the Bowes and Bounds resident and X-Factor contestant had a fantastic time since taking part in the X Factor in 2012. The “Blues Mama with a lotta Rock n Soul” made it to the live shows, under the watchful eye of Gary Barlow, but was eliminated in week two - shows.stv.tv . The 45-year-old claimed to be a full-time mother and failed to reveal that she had worked with some big names for the last 15 years (Kasabian, Stereophonics, Fatboy Slim and Happy Mondays). Melanie had the judges believe that she was an undiscovered talent but she has in fact been working as a session vocalist. She also released a single in 2007 and was signed industry heavyweight EMI, the mother-of-two told The Sun: 'I had a brief deal with EMI 18 years ago but was dropped after a year

c) Fridge Magnets, an Electronic/Dance/ Alt band championed by Nick Grimshaw and others. On January 7they announced and confirmed after a couple of years of both ups and downs that they had disbanded as the Fridge Magnets!
d) The Merrylees (Psychedelic Western Pop based band Edinburgh / Glasgow - Facebook >> YouTube). They will be supporting the legendary Paul Weller on all his forest dates this summer and the band returned from Germany where they opened for Babyshambles in Hamburg. They described themselves as “clear 60s/70s psychedelic rock, mixed with a modern, American-Brit hybrid sound, listening to The Merrylees sounds like a melting pot of The Doors, The Animals, The Kinks, Fleet Foxes, Jake Bugg and The Coral”
Want to say massive thank you to DashingDolls Glasgow for the beautiful hair and make up! Thank you ladies!

Kelly, a now mum to three children, with recent addition baby boy Billy Ray (born March 12th), is no stranger to the UK Country scene. In 2001 Kelly contributed a monthly page called Kelly's Eye, in the magazine Country Music International.
Her sensational single “Stay” reigned for 3 weeks at #1 (July 17, 2008 - Aug 7, 2008) on the British & Irish Hotdisc chart .
She signed to Halo Records in November 2007 recording her debut album, I CAN DREAM...ENGLAND 10 TITANS 0.
With tightening financial label constraints for future projects and Kelly wishing to take time out to raise a family she then took a break. In 2011, Mike Maslen introduced her to Talia Smith, another young country singer/songwriter (who in 2014 has found “fame” on the BBC show The Voice with Team Tom). The very attractive, bubbly and fun Romany pair of Kelly and Talia hit it off and formed, Travellin Rose. They wrote an album "Cinderella Dreaming"and recorded it in Nashville TN. Their first single “Made Up My Mind” stayed at #1 for 5 weeks on the British Hotdisc charts. Follow up single “V.I.P. Room” reached No.8 on the main Hotdisc Top 40.  They were also nominated and won the "Best Newcomer"award at the British Country Music Awards (BCMAwards) in 2012.  After a whirlwind couple of years, the lovely ladies have decided to concentrate on their solo careers. Kelly is now recording solo material, and looking forward to meeting everyone at her gigs.

The West Midlands Country Music Festival was due to take place at a new venue held at the Civic Halls (Wolverhampton Civic Hall North Street WVI 1RQ) with 3 stages of music for its 20th year and was to star Californian Country star James House playing on Saturday July 26th. The bold step to go indoors had been taken to “ensure the future of the event” basing it on the success of the C2C at the Dome in March when they pulled over 10,000 fans of country who don't get wet and got to use flush toilets! - Event Graphic Previously held at the outdoor East Park site Westerners were always welcome but chose not to support due to council regulations about guns/ knives and may felt the same atmosphere was lost!  Due to refurbishment, costs to stabilize old coal mines and expensive to hire East Park was lost.
http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2014/03/24/city-festival-wolvestock-axed-over-poor-sales/
Wolverhampton City Council stated on March 24 that they pulled the plug on the two-day festival due to poor advance ticket sales. Mark Blackstock, the council's outdoor events manager, said: “We are sad to announce that Wolvestock will not be taking place this year. “The event has been very popular over the last two decades and, in its heyday, attracted thousands of people to East Park. “However, last year, there had been a huge drop in attendance figures compared with previous events. "As a result of this, we moved the event to the Civic Halls for this year which would be more suitable for a smaller audience. “But the pre-sale figures are extremely low and holding the event is no longer feasible so, unfortunately, we have no option but to cancel the event.”
Wolvestock, which started life as a free festival, used to be held open-air in Hickman Park in Bilston and then East Park. However, there had been fears it might not survive the city council’s £123 million cutbacks which were announced earlier this year. Traders at last year’s event at East Park said they had been hit by a drop in takings and claimed the number of visitors to the once-popular attraction had dropped. They blamed a new £6 entry fee, which was introduced in a bid to raise £10,000 from the festival.
Another price rise was brought in this year, with day tickets for the 2014 festival advertised at £11 and weekend passes for £18.
Secure camping for this year’s event, was going to be provided in West Park some 15 minutes away. Previously the arrangement worked for people, being a mere two minutes away from tents etc.
Bands that were lined up for the 2014 Wolvestock included the BCMAward winners Raintown, Gary Quinn and Mel & Luke, Lisa Stanley Band, John Taylor Band, The Breeze and Quill Band of Joy.

On March 21st tickets went on sale for C2C Country To Country 2015 to get limited numbers of early bird tickets. The tickets were not at the advertised 2014 prices but up by some 40%. People (without knowing the line up for next year) also found they were unable to purchase them only to find tickets ended up and were then being sold on “tout” sites studhub, viagogo etc at nearly 3 times the price for a weekend pass!

The hype continues: The CMA announced the line-up for its June CMA Fest nightly concerts at LP Field in downtown Nashville >> YouTube

The CMA has announced it plans to rebrand and expand the annual Global Artist Party during CMA Music Festival in June.
CMA CEO Sarah Trahern made the announcement during the Second Annual International Marketing Summit at The O2 in London. “The Summit was the perfect platform and this was the ideal audience to announce the strategic growth of the international showcase from a club gathering to a main-stage event,” Trahern said.
The brand will now be known as CMA World and the Global Artist Party will now be called the CMA World GlobaLive concert.
The event will be held on Monday, June 2 on a free, outdoor stage on Broadway in downtown Nashville. The concert features performances by country music artists from countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, and the U.K and has been running since 2004.
Trahern says the new format and branding is designed to create greater recognition for the event and the artists involved.
Moving this incredibly popular event from a club setting to a large stage with international food and beverage vendors will enhance the experience for our visiting artists, and create a bigger platform to reach an even broader audience of fans and press from around the world,” Trahern said.

Sarah Darling has launched the Sweet Darling Patisserie. ...I fell in love with Paris long before I ever went there. When I was a young girl, I would dream about walking these beautiful streets. Who wouldn't love a city of love, art, fashion and patisseries. I've always had a passion for French baking. Growing up, I always found so much joy cooking...This is where the dream of "Sweet Darling" was born. In our dreams we are based in a little cobbled corner of Montmartre in Paris but during waking hours we are based in Nashville, Tennessee. Dot will be a joint venture between Big Machine, in Nashville, and Republic Records in New York, a division of the Universal Music Group.

35.4 million YouTube hits can't be wrong: Swedish DJ Avicii made his introduction to Billboard's Country Airplay chart, as >> "Hey Brother" bowed at No.59 last week. Avicii … country? Certain country programmers say that despite Avicii's status as one of EDM's cornerstones, the bluegrass-tinged "Hey Brother" is hardly a stretch for their format. With its club-ready beats, the song crowned the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated March 22). Its vocal from Union Station's Dan Tyminski, however, has helped spur its country inroads, most notably at Clear Channel-owned stations after the chain commissioned a new remix of it. "Brother" landed on Country Airplay with 97 plays (translating to an audience of 607,000), according to Nielsen BDS. The company's WSIX Nashville led with 21 plays for the song last week (March 10-16). This week it leaves Country Airplay chart, Dang!  US digital sales for “Hey Brother” have now topped the 1-million mark. It's his 3rd million-seller (Wake Me Up! 4,060,000 & Levels 1,660,000). On the Billboard Hot 100 it sits at #19 (+3) reaching a new 16 week peak!

Dierks Bentley's CMT Crossroads concert with OneRepublic premieres Friday night, but fans won't be hearing their planned cover of the Avicii pop hit, "Hey Brother," on the show. During rehearsals, OneRepublic front man Ryan Tedder kept singing different lyrics to the song to crack Dierks up. For example, Ryan replaced, "Hey brother, do you still believe in one another?" with "Hey brother, did you know your sister is your mother?" Dierks told ABC News Radio, "I was like, 'You're ruining [it]. We're never gonna be able to sing the song now 'cause we're gonna be cracking up the entire time.'"
Dierks has since added "Hey Brother" to his concert set list, but fans can expect to hear him and OneRepublic swapping vocals on each other's hits, including "I Hold On" and "Counting Stars." The show also includes a cover of the U2 hit, "Pride (in the Name of Love)."

R.I.P
Bobbe Seymour, a longtime steel guitar passed away last week (March 20th). Seymour played with the likes of Ferlin Husky, Jean Shepard, Stonewall Jackson and Billy Walker. At the beginning of 2012 he developed Spinal Stenosis which took away his ability to walk and play steel guitar. But he still instructed people on how to play..he never lost his style.
